چکیده

Successful information management implies the ability to design accurate representations of the real world of interest to targeted applications. Current systems do not provide representation schemes supporting the diversity of user needs. In the context of interoperability, as in Web access to heterogeneous data sources, they cannot properly integrate the diversity of stored representations. The objective of the European project described in this paper, MurMur, is to enhance GIS (or DBMS) functionality so that, relying on more flexible representation schemes, users may easily manage information using multiple representations. The added functionality will support multiple coexisting representations of the same real-word phenomena (semantic flexibility), including representations of geographic data at multiple resolutions (cartographic flexibility). This will in particular make possible a semantically meaningful management of multi-scale, integrated, and temporal geo-

The MurMur project: Modeling and querying multi-representation spatio-temporal databases

Successful information management implies the ability to design accurate representations of the real world of interest, in spite of the diversity of perceptions from the applications sharing the same database. Current database management systems do not provide representation schemes that preserve each perception while fully supporting their diversity and maintaining their consistency. This is a...

MurMur: A Research Agenda on Multiple Representations

One of the most publicized goals of modern computer society is to provide flexible access to information for everybody, anywhere, anytime. To make data management systems successful in satisfying user quest for information, an absolute requirement is the capability of tailoring the information to the peculiar needs of the targeted user. Unfortunately, this is a domain where current technology f...

iProsite: an improved prosite database achieved by replacing ambiguous positions with more informative representations

PROSITE database contains a set of entries corresponding to protein families, which are used to identify the family of a protein from its sequence. Although patterns and profiles are developed to be very selective, each may have false positive or negative hits. Considering false positives as items that reduce the selectiveness of a pattern, then, the more selective pattern we have, a more accur...

A Tool for Transforming Conceptual Schemas of Spatio-Temporal Databases with Multiple Representation

Nowadays, classical conceptual models (such as ER or UML) are used for designing database applications. These classical conceptual models usually come with associated CASE tools assisting the user from the creation of the conceptual schema until the generation of a physical schema for a relational or an object-relational DBMS. However, when developing spatial or temporal databases such classica...
